The Real Deal on Breastfeeding Instructional Video
How to Breastfeed, common breastfeeding myths debunked, and common breastfeeding problems solved
Jessica says: Have you ever heard "Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world"? Once I got the hang of it I totally agreed with this statement. Nursing my second baby was the easiest, most natural and most wonderful thing in the world (or I wouldn't still be doing so more than 2 years later). But the first few weeks after my first child's birth were a nightmare!
With more reading and discussion than I'd done for any of my college courses, it was still the single hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It's no wonder why those who "wing it" often end up giving up soon after delivery.
But breastfeeding doesn't have to be difficult at all. The biggest reason it is so hard is because nobody knows anything about breastfeeding in our culture. Not other moms, not labor and delivery nurses, and least of all doctors! (Did you know that your gynocologist most likely spent less than one day in medical school learning about how breastfeeding works?)
We lack a culture of breastfeeding women to expose us to it throughout our lives. You have women all around you that can teach you to diaper, soothe and care for a baby. But when it comes to breastfeeding how many of us have ever actually seen a mother latch her baby onto her nipple? Even if we've had some exposure to breastfeeding, because of our social hang ups we've never studied it like we do the other intricacies of raising a child.
With each layer of preparation you are more likely to succeed, and this video is the best resource I have found! I scoured the web looking for photos of a proper latch and hold. I searched for anything about supply issues and breast refusal. I prayed for an online video clip showing the difference between when a baby is swallowing and just comfort sucking. I really could have saved myself weeks of my life if I had owned this video first.
If you don't have a culture of breastfeeding women in your "village", this video is for you. If you need to educate yourself, a friend, your partner, your mother or gasp your mother-in-law, you need this video. If you just think you could use a little more knowledge... Well, you know.
