Whew! I think it's finally over!

As you may be aware, we recently underwent an upgrade tot he software upon which our site is built. Unlike the unlimited budgets that run upgrades on the major sites (like dell.com or something) we did as much testing as we could and then just went for it. It was rough for a little while, but we've come out so much the better at the end.

You may notice some new features now, and you will likely notice some popping up in the near future. Hopefully you find them useful and enriching to your online experience. We do try...

Eva Lillian is Getting Overhauled!

We've finally taken the plunge and are in the process of upgrading our site in order to bring you tons of new features and functionality. You may have noticed that some photos can now be supersized for viewing additional details. This feature and more will continue to be improved over the next few weeks, along with adding several new features. Most improvements will be invisible, of course, but they should all lead to an enhanced user experience.

During this process we have switched to using Paypal for our checkout. You may notice it takes a few more steps to get through checkout, but this should be corrected by the end of the weekend. You also may notice some strange glitches or momentary outages. We are trying our best to keep these to an absolute minimum.

We encourage you to give us a call at our customer service number, or shoot us an email, to let us know if you encounter any problems with our site. We are making these changes for you and would hate more than anything to have them negatively affect your interaction with us.

What's Coming

Maternity
In the next 2 weeks we'll have the cutest stuff from Mommy-Go-Round's new line of maternity. They've got maternity jumpsuits, dresses, tops, shorts, and so much more. It's absolutely stunning stuff. And there's so much more maternity to come...

Nursing
By the middle of February we'll also have 2 new nursing pajamas. Similar to our current best-selling style by Mommy Chic, but in great new colors.

The most exciting announcement of all...

Eva Lillian's own nursing line is finally on its way. It's been a long year that we've been teasing and hinting, but at last it looks like February is the magical month. And let me just say that you will not believe your eyes. A proud Mama always talks about her kids this way, but I must say, I sure do have the prettiest nursing designs on the block (breathing on my knuckles and rubbing them on the front of my shirt). We'll be contacting our wholesalers in about a week with details, and we'll make the official announcement with preview photos and availability dates in our next newsletter.

Interesting Info

As always, we have got some very interesting info on our site. Here is a sample of one of our articles (Our most popular article of all time):

Natural Labor Induction Methods:
Will Castor Oil or Eggplant Start Labor?
Jessica Hudson: Owner Eva Lillian Maternity Oct. 28 2004

Labor Inducing Eggplant Parmesan
One of the methods of self-inducing labor that's been sweeping the internet in recent years is the myth that eggplant will send you into labor. This myth started when a news story began circulating the country about a restaurant in GA, named Scalini's. Apparently over 300 babies have been born in the past 23 years, within 48 hours after their mothers had eaten the eggplant parmegiana.

The funny part is, it may just be that the dish causes the women to go into labor, but it's not the eggplant. The herbs Oregano and Basil have properties that may cause contractions, though it is not yet known how or in what quantities. This is why, in aromatherapy circles, these herbs and essential oils are to be avoided whenever possible during pregnancy.

Sex to Induce Labor

Semen contains prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause the cervix to "ripen", or soften and prepare to open. While it is debatable whether there are enough prostaglandins in semen to have any effect, it is not a terrible way to keep hope alive and while away the last weeks of your pregnancy. Another great thing, orgasm produces oxytocin, the hormone that causes contractions. So, between the two, there is a pretty good recipe for labor.

Evening Primrose Oil and Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Neither will induce labor. I will repeat this at the end of this section, to make sure you understand this, as there is a lot of confusion and misconception surrounding these two substances.

Evening primrose oil is an excellent source of prostaglandins, which we already determined readies your cervix for labor. It can be taken orally as soon as 34 weeks, and can be applied directly to the cervix at full term (36 weeks). The general recommendation is two 500mg capsules per day until week 38, at which time you increase to 3-4 per day. The entire capsule can be inserted vaginally (inserted just before bed, it will dissolve before the first time you wake to use the bathroom), or you can use the oil on your fingers for your perineal massage, then also rub on your cervix (assuming you can reach it). Applying directly to the cervix is great, but the beneficial ingredients are absorbed through the external skin or the stomach also.

Red raspberry leaf tea is a uterine tonic used by Native Americans for thousands of years. It tones your uterus by helping to "focus" your Braxton Hicks contractions. It helps your uterus do more effective exercising while you are pregnant, if you will. It does not "cause" contractions and can be safely used throughout pregnancy. It is contraindicated for those having complications "just in case", however, by most doctors who do not understand its use. I safely used it from the moment I learned I was pregnant at six weeks until months after I delivered, with both of my children. (It helps to tone the uterus after delivery as well, shrinking it back to size more quickly and reducing bleeding.)

Again, neither of these actually causes labor to start!

Castor Oil to Bring on Labor
First let me just say that I do not recommend this method...

New Stuff

BellySock

One of our very coolest new products is the BellySock. What is a BellySock? A simple maternity accessory that slips over your belly with no buttons, snaps, or hooks to deal with. The stylish maternity accessory that keeps your belly covered when your maternity tops don’t.

Garden Skirt Coral Belt Over Tank Cotton Candy Belt Black Dot Tube Top Black Dot Poncho

Garden Skirt Coral Belt Over Tank Cotton Candy Skirt Black Dot Poncho Cotton Candy Nursing

BellySock works with non-maternity clothing and maternity clothing to give you a unique look and style. With BellySock, instantly expand your wardrobe to include all your favorite tops you thought you could no longer wear through pregnancy.

Or, choose a Nursing BellySock, to conceal and keep your belly warm when breastfeeding simply by pulling it up over your belly and just under your chest. The fabric feels great against your skin and baby’s skin. A great alternative to a draped blanket over you, it allows you to maintain that special eye contact with baby as well as allow sufficient air flow to baby while breastfeeding.

Nurse-n-Glow Nighttime Co Sleeping Nursing Pillow

You've nursed a baby in your bed. You know that it is the single best way to get some sleep as a new mom. You also know how difficult it can be in the beginning.

However, thanks to the Nurse-n-Glow nursing pillow, not so much anymore. The self-contained “soft glow” light allows Mom to see what she is doing without disturbing her baby or partner. Plus, the lighting unit has a programmable chip that shuts the light off after 30 minutes, thus saving on battery life. In addition the light can be turned on or off manually by pressing the top of the pillow.

The pillow's size and sturdy construction make it an effective barrier between sleeping partner and baby. This helps insure a safer co-sleeping environment for all, providing peace of mind for both mother and partner.

Interesting Info

'Tis the season of eating, and far be it from me to not make a woman feel a little better about chocolate during the Holidays!

As always, we have got some very interesting info on our site. Here is a sample of one of our articles:

The Health Benefits of Chocolate ~ It's OK to Eat a Candy Bar a Day When Pregnant. Really!
~by Susie Cortright, http://www.bestselfhelp.com

Good news. Research says you can have your cake and eat it, too. As long as that cake is chocolate. For centuries, chocolate has been used to treat diseases and maladies such as depression. Civilizations from Mexico to Europe have hailed chocolate as an aphrodisiac. The U.S. government officially recognized its virtues in World War II, making the chocolate candy bar standard issue for the military.

Chocolate's scientific name, theobroma cacao, is literally translated as "food of the gods," and we chocolate cravers don't need any studies to tell us the power of chocolate in mood alteration. Its feel good chemicals have long been associated with feelings of love, safety, and comfort. Maybe that's why Americans eat an average of 12 pounds of chocolate per year.

Chocolate contains vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E, as well as potassium, sodium, iron, and fluorine. Now, researchers say those creamy chocolate confections may actually help us live longer, too.

Harvard researchers tracked nearly 8,000 males, with an average age of 65. Those men who enjoyed chocolate and candy lived almost a year longer than those who did not. Those who ate one to three candy bars per month had a 36 percent lower risk of death (compared to the people who ate no candy), while those who ate three or more candy bars per week had a 16 percent lower risk.

Why? The researchers say they don't know for sure, but that it might have something to do with antioxidants. Chocolate contains the same antioxidant chemicals as wine (phenols). In the chocolate bar, phenols help preserve the fat. In our bodies, phenol can help prevent atherosclerosis.

Like anything, chocolate is best enjoyed in moderation. Just one ounce of solid chocolate packs about 150 calories and can be as much as 50 percent fat. So, for your next chocolate fix, consider reduced fat alternatives, such as chocolate covered foods or chocolate syrup

Contest

We've decided to hold one lighthearted contest in each of our newletters through the end of the year. We're looking for feedback and participation from our customers. While our complaints aren't numerous, that's about all you hear in this or any service business. People tell you when they are unhappy, but assume you know when they are happy. We want to hear more happies, dang it! Share! Let us get to know you! We're small enough that there's a person behind every interaction with us (and often it's this person, with a swiss cheese brain, so forgive me if I don't remember you right away by name), and we want to make that clear to all of our customers. We're not some big faceless corporation, or a small business trying to put on airs. We're just like you, so let us get to know you a little.

We've all been told a pregnancy or breastfeeding myth as though it were an absolute fact. Send us the most ridiculous myth you were ever told and you could win one of three prizes.

First Prize (for the most ridiculous myth/story): $100 Gift certificate to our store
Second Prize (for the second most ridiculous...): $50 Gift Certificate to our store
Third Prize (for the third most...): your choice of Earth Mama Angel Baby herbal care kits

Submit all entries to our email address, found here http://www.evalillian.com/contact.aspx. Entries will be posted at http://www.evalillian.com/myths.aspx for all to share and have a good laugh. Winners will be decided by me (it's good to be the queen) and announced and awarded in our next newsletter, the first week in November.

Interesting Info

As always, we have got some very interesting info on our site. Here is a sample of one of our articles:

Morning Sickness in Pregnancy ~ What to Do About the Maternity Curse
by Jessica Hudson ~ Owner Eva Lillian Maternity

We’ve all heard the saltines and gingerale fix. But many of us have some downright severe morning sickness. What causes it, how can it be stopped, and when is it bad enough to worry? Read on.

Only one third to one half of expecting women ever experience the nausea and/or vomiting of morning sickness. Morning sickness is actually misnamed since it can strike at any time of the day. The condition rarely interferes with proper nutrition enough to harm the developing fetus, and for most women, tapers off after the third month. However, if you can't keep any food down for more than three days, see your doctor or midwife. Although the causes of nausea in pregnancy are not yet known, the following have been suggested as contributory factors: low blood sugar, low blood pressure, hormonal changes, emotional ambivalence about the pregnancy, food deficiency (in particular of vitamin B6 and iron), an excess of refined, spicy, or greasy foods, and pressure on the stomach from the growing uterus in the last few weeks of pregnancy.

Practical tips

  • wear maternity clothes as soon as possible. Maternity clothes are made specifically to not put pressure on your abdomen, which can worsen nausea. There are many maternity pants now that sit underneath your belly and can be worn during and after pregnancy. These maternity pants are perfect for early pregnancy, and many maternity shirts are made similarly, to carry you through all stages of pregnancy and beyond. (See our store for such styles)
  • eat frequent, small meals rather than larger ones less often
  • avoid strong odors and small, enclosed spaces
  • try drinking fluids (no caffeine!) in between meals rather than with them.
avoid sugars and simple carbohydrates - choose complex carbohydrates instead, such as whole grains
  • take your prenatal vitamin later in the day or before bed
  • wake up slowly, keeping a bland food such as saltine crackers near the bed and eating a small amount before getting out of bed
  • Eat high protein foods. You need them for the protein, but they also help regulate the blood sugar, preventing those plummets that bring on or worsen nausea

Herbal Approaches

Cloves, Ginger, Ginseng, Milk Thistle (Silymarin), Red raspberry plant.

Ginger- People have long relied on ginger for upset stomachs. It is probably the best-known carminative (removing gas and relaxing the intestinal tract). It's particularly appealing to pregnant women because it has none of the side effects that drug treatment can have. You can get ginger capsules at health food stores.

Milk Thistle supports the liver, which may be having difficulty detoxifying.

Essential oils

Cardamom Essence, Coriander Essence, Ginger Essence, Peppermint Essence. Use essential oils of lavender, chamomile, and rose (either singly or combined) mixed with a base oil, as a massage oil. You can also put a drop or two of one of these on a tissue or cotton ball and carry it with you.
Some of us need to wait until the last possible moment, when wearing maternity clothes becomes an absolute necessity, to announce our pregnancies. It's hard to hide a new pregnancy when morning sickness is keeping you in the bathroom every time your coworkers make a new pot of coffee or order in Mexican for lunch. Peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball is particularly helpful for disguising such strong smells that may be causing you nausea.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves applying deep pressure to specific neurological reflex points on the hands and feet

Reflexology During Pregnancy

Under the influence of the hormones of pregnancy and the developing life within her, the woman undergoes enormous physical changes. Pregnancy for some is a long period of discomfort and fatigue – but it doesn’t have to be. Research has shown that ten sessions of Reflexology during pregnancy can reduce the length of time spent in labor, with fewer complications and interventions. The mother and the baby recover quicker and are more relaxed. From the early stages or morning sickness to delivery discomfort, pregnancy can be physically demanding.

Reflexology can help with relief of the following complaints during pregnancy:
Morning sickness
Nausea and headaches
Pain and discomfort
Loss of bladder control
Backache
Stress and anxiety
Lack of sleep and fatigue
Digestive problems such as constipation
Swollen/puffy ankles and legs

Reflexology is excellent in maintaining balance during the rapidly changing experience of pregnancy. The skill of the Reflexologist is to balance and harmonize the whole being in preparation for delivery and motherhood. Reflexology can help to make pregnancy an enjoyable experience.

Labor and Birth

Reflexology can play an important role during the birth. Many women have Reflexology to encourage labor, especially if they are overdue. Reflexology stimulates the pituitary gland to release oxytocin, the hormone that starts uterine contractions.

What are we doing for Katrina victims?

Making self-announcements about how a business is helping in the aftermath of the hurricane is almost trite at this point, and I didn't even want to comment. But my staff berated me until I finally do so now.

Beginning the day the flooding was apparent and the red cross began requesting donations, I vowed that a portion of every sale would go to help the victims of Katrina, until the city is dry and people are able to begin returning to their homes and rebuilding their lives. We'll be making weekly donations, and have in fact already made 1 at this point. I even attempted to become a breastmilk donor for the tiny babies that lost their mothers, but ironically I am not eligible as I the baby I am nursing is not under 12 months. (If you'd like to donate breastmilk to a local milk bank please visit www.hmbana.com for more information)

Not a marketing ploy, didn't send a special email to announce it, just love and shared agony pouring out from our hearts here at Eva Lillian...
